New Zealand’s Silver Ferns netball team has given the seal of approval to two new indoor multipurpose courts on the Coast, with the players praising the quality of the playing surface and other facilities.
The netballers were one of the first groups to use the courts at the Sunshine Coast Recreation Precinct last month.
Located in Currimundi, the courts are suitable for sports including netball, basketball, volleyball, badminton, futsal, wheelchair sports and fitness classes.
The courts also have two universally designed change rooms, amenities, a cafe and carparking.
The precinct already offers a range of sport and active recreation opportunities like the aerial adventure park, high ropes course, giant swing, swimming pool, rock climbing and caving.
The courts were delivered via the state government’s $40 million investment through the Queensland Active Precincts Initiative.
The opening of the indoor courts will provide more opportunities for the community to be active, creating a space for schools, community groups and sporting teams to host training, games and other significant events.
Caloundra MP Jason Hunt said there was high demand for sporting courts in the area.
“The Sunshine Coast region is known for its active lifestyle and the launch of the new Sunshine Coast Recreation Precinct Multipurpose Courts will provide a new destination for our residents to keep fit,” he said.
“Supporting local sports teams, fitness groups and even major events, the courts are set to be a great addition to the already amazing and highly utilised facilities at the precinct.”
Minister for Tourism, Innovation and Sport Stirling Hinchliffe said the facility would be an asset for the community in the lead-up to the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics.
“The official opening of these courts is a terrific addition to what is an already impressive recreation precinct, a true community asset and part of our commitment to provide more active spaces for Queenslanders,” he said.
“We know getting more Queenslanders involved in community sport and active recreation helps improve their long-term health and wellbeing.
“We have worked closely with the Sunshine Coast community to ensure that this precinct is accessible for Queenslanders of all abilities.
“It’s already providing a boost to the local visitor economy with International teams like the New Zealand Silver Ferns taking advantage of the world-class facilities, and that demand will only grow during the nine-year runway to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
