About 2500 intrepid hikers traversed sections of the region’s coastline last Friday, raising awareness and funds in support of the Heart Foundation.

Coastrek Sunshine Coast provides an active getaway with purpose, with its formula of fun, fitness, friends and fundraising.

The event aimed to raise $850,000 for the Heart Foundation’s life-saving research and programs to combat heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in Australia.

A choice of distances was on offer: the 60km setting off at 6am from Currimundi Beach; the 45km setting off at 7am from Alexandra Headland, the 30km setting off from Mudjimba at 9.30am and, for night owls, the new ‘Twilight 20km’ leaving Coolum at 3pm and hiking into sunset. All distances finished in Noosa Woods.

Among the participants was Heart Foundation CEO David Lloyd and his team, who has pledged to hike all five Coastrek events this year.

The Sunshine Coast was his third for the year, having earlier hiked Sydney and the Mornington Peninsula, with the Fleurieu Peninsula and Margaret River later this year to complete the series.

Fundraising remains open until Sunday, July 30. Donations can be made here.
