The last Sunshine Coast outlet of a once-iconic restaurant chain has announced its closure.

Hog’s Breath Cafe Caloundra posted to social media on Monday informing diners it had shut permanently.

“We regret to inform you that Hog’s Breath Cafe Caloundra has permanently closed,” it said.

“We’ve truly enjoyed serving the Caloundra community and thank all of our loyal guests for their support over the years.”

A message on the restaurant’s website said the closure was due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

“We’ve taken great pride in being Caloundra’s No.1 spot for great food, fun times and incredible memories,” it said.

“Thank you for every steak shared, every birthday celebrated and every family night, first date and friendly catch-up that happened within our walls. You’ve been more than just customers; you’ve felt like part of our family.

“While this chapter has come to a close, we’re incredibly proud of the memories made and the friendships formed. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for the support, the laughs, and the love.”

The restaurant was part of the Rumba Beach Resort on the Bulcock Beach Esplanade. It is understood the restaurant opened soon after the resort in 2009 and had space for about 150 diners.

A feature of the outlet was the portholes in the ceiling that looked straight through to the resort’s pool above.

The Hog’s Breath Cafe at The Wharf in Mooloolaba closed in November 2022 after more than 30 years at the iconic waterfront location.

The restaurant chain began in 1989 at Airlie Beach and is known for its “famous 18-hour slow-cooked prime rib”. Mooloolaba was the second location to open, in November 1990.

“The Hog’s Breath experience has always been based on good times, great company and amazing food for the whole family,” its website says.

The restaurant once had more than 80 outlets across Australia but its website shows only 17 remain. Tom Elliott was appointed as CEO in May 2025 but a LinkedIn post earlier this year said he and Hog’s Breath had “mutually agreed to part ways”.

The nearest Hog’s Breath Cafe to the Sunshine Coast is now at Morayfield, in Brisbane’s north.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and hope to see you at Hog’s Breath Cafe Morayfield,” the Caloundra restaurant’s post said.
