A new memorial plaque has been established at a central Sunshine Coast park.
A plinth and plaque, to recognise Australia’s servicewomen, was installed at Cotton Tree Park and marked with a dedication ceremony on February 26.
It has essentially replaced a small memorial plaque at ground level, after an 18-month advocacy and consultation process.
The Maroochy RSL issued a media release stating that it is “a long-overdue tribute” to ensure “women’s service is honoured proudly and prominently”.
The release stated that members of the Sunshine Coast Ex-Service and Serving Women’s Association Inc had identified “the need for a more visible and equal form of acknowledgement”.
The project received support from the Maroochy RSL, its board and sub-branch members.
Sunshine Coast Ex-Service and Serving Women’s Association Inc president Larraine Houlihan said the new plaque recognised women who have served, and continue to serve, Australia.
“This memorial plaque honours all servicewomen across Australia, whether nurses, Army, Navy or Air Force,” she said.
“Every woman who has served our country, or will serve in the future, deserves to be acknowledged.”

The elevated plaque bears the same dedication as the original, now positioned overlooking the water.
It states: “In memory of women who served this country in the Australian Defence Force at home, overseas, in time of war, in conflicts and in peace, through their dedication, commitment and sacrifice.”
The dedication ceremony included addresses from the padre Rodney Ackerman and Maroochy RSL president Peter Tsakissiris. The plaque was unveiled by ex-Women’s Royal Australian Air Force member Margaret Humby.
Ms Houlihan said Ms Humby’s role in the unveiling was symbolic.
“Margaret represents all of us, and she is honoured to be unveiling the plaque,” she said.
The Sunshine Coast Ex-Service and Serving Women’s Association Inc has more than 90 active members across the region. Members and supporters travelled from Bundaberg, Gin Gin, Gayndah, Hervey Bay and Brisbane to attend the dedication.
