A family-owned cafe that had operated in the Sunshine Coast hinterland for more than a decade has closed amid what it called a “lease dispute”.
The operators of Sarah’s Unplugged, in the heart of Maleny’s Maple Street, said they had “heavy, shocked and honestly speechless hearts” after closing permanently last weekend.
It comes after Monique Castaldi, the daughter of the eponymous Sarah, created a fundraising campaign earlier this month to help cover legal and operational costs.
A social media post on Tuesday, signed by “Sarah, Tom (head chef and proud son), Moni (Sarah’s daughter) and our entire Sarah’s team”, paid tribute to the cafe’s supporters.
“And just like that … we closed the doors one final time at Sarah’s Unplugged,” it said.
“What a weekend. What a chapter. What a community.
“To our incredible staff – past and present – thank you for pouring your energy, care and heart into this space. You helped turn a cafe into something far greater than coffee and food.
“To our loyal suppliers who backed a small family business time and time again – thank you for believing in us.
“And to our beautiful locals and customers – you are the reason Sarah’s became what it did.
“This weekend was emotional beyond words. Seeing so many of you come in, share stories, hug us, laugh with us and support us one last time was something we will carry forever. It was overwhelming in the most beautiful way. We hold so much gratitude for each and every one of you.”

The cafe opened in 2016 and had become a beloved community hub.
“My mum has poured her entire soul into Sarah’s Unplugged,” Ms Castaldi’s GoFundMe campaign said.
“For over 10 years, this cafe hasn’t just been her livelihood – it’s been her purpose. She has shown up every single day with heart, resilience and a deep belief in community, even when things were hard behind the scenes.
“This is more than a cafe. It’s a place where people have been seen, heard, welcomed and remembered. Where locals know they can walk in and feel at home. Where staff have been treated like family. Where connection has always mattered more than profit.”

The cafe’s post said the funds from the campaign would be used on legal fees and the “significant” costs of packing down the premises.
“Your generosity is helping us navigate this unexpected and incredibly fast transition,” it said.
But the post also teased a possible comeback for the business.
“We are actively looking at other locations and exploring what might be possible next,” it said.
“As soon as we know anything concrete, you will all know – and we will absolutely put the call out.
“This chapter has been one of the biggest of our lives. Closing it is hard – harder than we can explain. Once we move through this phase (one we truly wish we didn’t have to), we will begin focusing fully on what’s next.”

The cafe’s Facebook page has been flooded with messages of support since the closure.
“Maleny’s main street just won’t be the same. Sarah, you have worked so incredibly hard for so many years. I can’t wait to see what you do next. You have so much strength,” one post said.

Sarah’s Unplugged was approached for further comment.
