Construction is about to begin on a multimillion-dollar project along one of the Sunshine Coast’s busiest roads.
Work is expected to start, within weeks, on the First Avenue Upgrade in the heart of Maroochydore. About 6000 to 9000 vehicles use the road per day.
An array of improvements is set to be made to the 300m stretch of the road from the Duporth Avenue bridge to Aerodrome Road.
There will be new crossings, upgraded and widened footpaths, extended kerbing, extensive landscaping and new street furniture.
The speed limit will be permanently reduced from 50km/h to 40km/h, two bus stops will be relocated to The Esplanade and 19 on-street car parks will be removed.
It’s likely to be one-way traffic during the 14-month construction period, from February 2026 to April 2027.

The council stated, via a project newsletter, that the upgrade would revitalise the area.
“The new attractive streetscape will soon transform First Avenue into a vibrant, shady and inclusive space.”
“It will provide businesses, residents and visitors with a more inviting space to live, work and play.”

Two raised pedestrian crossings are set to be installed along First Avenue and a scramble crossing established at the intersection of First Avenue, Duporth Avenue and The Esplanade. There should also be raised crossings along side streets – Cornmeal Parade, Memorial Avenue and George Street.
The landscaping should include 70 trees and 1800 plants.
The bus stops will be relocated The Esplanade “to minimise conflict with other First Avenue street users”.
The design of the streetscape was developed from 2018 to 2022, with community consultation.
The project has significant funding, including $11.9 million from the federal government.
Councillor Joe Natoli posted a project update on social media.
“With underground services investigations now complete and a major funding grant announced … construction will start in early 2026 and continue through 2027, weather and site conditions permitting.
“The public tender process for the construction contract has now concluded and the successful contractor will be announced soon.”
Comments from locals, on Cr Natoli’s social media page, pressed the apparent need for upgrades at Aerodrome Road, Main Road at Kuluin, and Sugar Road and Maud Street at Maroochydore.
Construction will start at the northern end of First Avenue, near Duporth Avenue, and progress to the intersection with Aerodrome Road. Work will generally take place Monday to Friday, 6am to 4pm and 6pm to midnight.
Vehicle and pedestrian access will remain during construction, sometimes via detours or alternative access routes. There will be single lane closures.

The council spokesperson elaborated on the impending removal of 19 on-street car parks.
“While some parking will be reduced, there are still nearby off-street parking options and timed parking available to ensure convenience and turnover,” they said.
“These changes have been carefully planned to balance accessibility with the benefits of a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
“By reallocating on‑street parking to create wider footpaths and safer pedestrian areas, we’re encouraging people to slow down, stay longer and explore local shops and cafes. This helps boost trade and supports a more vibrant, walkable town centre.
“This project will create a safer, more inclusive town centre that supports local businesses, encourages walking and cycling, and provides a welcoming space for our community. It also helps reduce congestion and promotes sustainable transport choices.”
The relatively new stretch of First Avenue, south of Aerodrome Road and through the new city centre, is not included in the upgrade.
