Many Sunshine Coast residents will attend services and pause for a minute’s silence to commemorate Remembrance Day on November 11.

Locals will gather at towns and suburbs around the region to acknowledge service personnel who gave their life in service of their country, those who served and came home injured or ill and those who bravely serve today.

Remembrance Day was originally announced to mark the anniversary of the Armistice that ended fighting with Germany in World War I in 1918. More than 60,000 Australian solders died in The Great War and another 150,000 were wounded or taken prisoner.

Australians now pause on November 11 each year to remember those who served and sacrificed for the nation in WWI and peacekeeping operations since.

RSL Queensland stated that “what matters most is that we remember to remember”.

A Remembrance Day ceremony will be held in Maleny again.

More than 160 services are expected to be hosted around the state by RSL Sub Branches.

RSL Queensland president Major General Stephen Day encouraged Queenslanders to take a moment to pause and remember those who served for our country.

“To safeguard their legacy, it is important that we continue to observe Remembrance Day and remember that the ultimate price they paid was not in vain,” he said.

“The services held across Queensland by our many RSL Sub Branches help ensure the stories and sacrifices of our veterans are not forgotten.

“While Remembrance Day falls on a Tuesday this year, we ask all Queenslanders to remember to remember wherever they are – whether that be at work, school or home – and pause for a minute’s silence.

“We understand not everyone might be able to attend a service in person but we encourage the community to wear a poppy and take time at 11am to reflect on those who served and sacrificed for our nation.

“This day gives us all an opportunity to honour and acknowledge those who sacrificed their future so that we could enjoy our today.”
