More than $2.5 million of state government funding has been committed for a signalised crossing at a key intersection in a Sunshine Coast town.
The funding will accelerate the project at the junction of Currie and Mill streets in Nambour.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg announced the commitment at the site on Friday.
“This investment will significantly enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility in the heart of Nambour, while supporting Sunshine Coast Council’s vision for a more vibrant, connected town centre,” he said.
“We’ve worked closely with council throughout the planning process, reviewing concept designs and traffic modelling, to ensure the upgrades integrate smoothly with the state-controlled road and transport network in Nambour.”
The signalised crossing is planned for the northern side of the intersection, to allow pedestrians to cross the town’s main thoroughfare, Currie Street.
Member for Nicklin Marty Hunt said the project would make a significant difference to the Nambour CBD and community.
“Locals have been calling for improvements to the Nambour streetscape for some time and this significant investment represents a big step forward: improving safety, enhancing the look and feel of our town centre and helping to revitalise Nambour,” he said.
“This partnership with council builds on the strong private investment already underway, showing real confidence in Nambour and making our town more accessible and liveable.”
Sunshine Coast mayor Rosanna Natoli welcomed the funding announcement, which will contribute to a plan to revitalise multiple sections of the CBD.
“This funding is an exciting and significant boost for Nambour and will allow us to deliver key stages of the Namba Place Plan concurrently,” she said.
“The new pedestrian crossing on Currie Street will not only improve safety for pedestrians but also enhance the overall accessibility and connectivity of Nambour’s town centre. This will have a significant impact on the entire local community.”
Councillor David Law said this was the start of the implementation of the community-led plan to renew Nambour’s town centre.
“Starting in the first half of 2026, the transformation will bring new life to Mill and Currie streets with improved lighting, safer pedestrian crossings, upgraded footpaths, fresh landscaping, street furniture and vibrant outdoor dining spaces,” he said.
“This milestone is a long-awaited outcome for the first stage of the Namba Place Plan, and I want to thank everyone who’s contributed to help bring this vision to life.”
