The adage “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure” certainly rings true for one lifelong op-shopper and founder of a new Coast enterprise, which guides people on the hunt for secondhand prizes.

World traveller Josie Watts saw a gap in the market for op shop bus tours when she returned to the Coast, so she purchased a funky, eye-catching ‘rainbow’ bus and started her own small business.

Op Shop Hopper was launched in September and its current tours cover the op shop circuit from Pomona to Caloundra.

Tours run every Saturday and four different ‘adventures’ are offered on a rotating basis. The tour on the first Saturday of the month heads to Pomona and Cooroy; the second Saturday covers Nicklin Way at Warana to Brightwater; the third Saturday traverses Coolum to Noosaville; and the fourth Saturday goes to downtown Caloundra.

The bus tours are conducted by a driver who has local knowledge and offers commentary on fun facts, history and local culture. The tours cater for small groups of eight to 18 people and allow time for morning tea along the way.

“Op shopping has that special thrill about it with unique offerings and hidden treasures in each charity shop,” Ms Watts said.

“The ability to find what you need and help our community is a powerful motivator to share with others.

“I relish and appreciate the opportunity to bring like-minded people together and see them explore the Sunshine Coast and find a bargain.”

As the company grows, Ms Watts said she hoped to offer tours on Mondays and Wednesdays to groups or individuals who can choose from a larger list of six tours or a “build your own adventure”’ concept.  These bespoke tours would likely be offered to over-50s living groups and social groups.

“Op shopping is a fantastic opportunity to connect with your community, chatting with the volunteer staff at the stores, reminiscing with fellow shoppers as you sort through treasures,” Ms Watts said.

“Customers can find the time to share their experiences with like-minded shoppers, of finding that hidden treasure, or sought-after nostalgic items.

“Stretching our budgets is easier at the op shop, often being able to find quality items at a fraction of the price.

“Many customers are thinking more sustainably regarding their spending by becoming part of the recycling, reusing and donating cycle, they are more aware of buying purposefully.”
