A riverside business is petitioning against the design of a “much needed” toilet block after the $1 million project was announced earlier this year.

Noosa Council has conducted extensive consultation with nearby businesses and disability groups as part of the process for the design of the new facility at Quota Park on Gympie Terrace, Noosaville.

It follows a state government pledge to contribute funding to the council-delivered project, which would include a bathroom for people with high support needs and fill a gap in amenities between Pirate Park and the tennis courts.

A concept design released by the council shows a proposed 47sqm public amenities facility, access ramps and footpaths for a section of the park adjacent to the car park.

Noosa Council infrastructure services director Shaun Walsh said there was overwhelming support for the construction of an all-abilities Changing Places toilet block at Quota Park.

“Over a dozen sites and layouts were carefully considered. This site and the option of such a facility received strong support during our engagement on the Noosaville Foreshore Infrastructure Management Plan,” he said.

Pelican Boat Hire, which operates in the Quota Park precinct near the iconic Big Pelican float, has since initiated a petition calling for the plans to be revised.

“We are calling on Noosa Council to revise their design for the proposed toilet block beside the Big Pelican,” a statement from Pelican Boat Hire said.

“We know more toilets are needed on the foreshore … but the design should not destroy 40 per cent of the much-loved grass area simply because council won’t cut down two trees and minimise the building’s footprint.”

Mr Walsh said the structure would impact less than 15 per cent of the grassed area, which includes proposed garden beds and pathways.

“We’ve held several discussions with owners of businesses in the area and explained the design and project,” he said.

“This facility is a well-equipped accessible toilet that allows people with high support needs to fully participate in our community and utilise Noosaville foreshore.

“The final design strives to maximise open space at Quota Park, retain existing trees and reduce the visual impact of the building, and deliver a high standard of architecture by embracing Noosa design principles.”

The petition, which is only available to sign in person, is yet to be lodged with Noosa Council.

Pelican Boat Hire has been contacted for further comment.
