The Sunshine Coast’s longest-running marine tourism operator is embarking on a new chapter under new leadership, with plans for a new facility and fresh experiences.

Sunreef founder Philip Hart has handed ownership to long-time managers and experienced dive instructors and skippers Matthew Davis and Jonny Fell.

Mr Hart, who spent a decade at the helm, said the pair were well placed to take over.

“From pioneering Australia’s first-ever swim with humpback whales experience to setting new standards in marine safety and customer service, they’ve helped shape every milestone,” he said.

“This transition is a celebration of their dedication and a promise to uphold and expand Sunreef’s mission.”

Under the duo’s leadership, Sunreef will open a state-of-the-art facility at its base at The Wharf in Mooloolaba and launch new marine activities including eco-focused jet ski tours and public lifesaving courses to connect visitors with the region’s ocean environment.

Mr Fell said most details about the new facility were “under wraps” but it will offer immersive exhibits and interactive touchpoints that invite visitors to connect with the ocean.

Upcoming experiences include an Eco Jetski Safari to Mudjimba Island and expanded lifesaving training.

Mr Davis added that courses will cover first aid, advanced resuscitation and more.

Matt Davis and John Fell are the new owners of Sunreef.

“These are life-saving skills everyone should have,” he said.

“Safety is the backbone of everything we do, and we’re proud to share that expertise with our community.”

Sunreef also operates a Professional Association of Diving Instructors 5-Star Training Centre, offering a range of scuba courses.

“Every dive is an opportunity to connect with the ocean, and every certification is a step toward becoming a guardian of it,” Mr Fell said.

John Fell is a leading dive instructor.

“Our goal is to cultivate a global community of ocean stewards, one diver at a time.”

The new owners said Sunreef would continue a commitment to sustainability, conservation and community collaboration – strengthening partnerships with the Department of Environment, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Sunshine Coast Council, UniSC, Oceans for All and Sea Shepherd, and local residents and businesses.

Founded in 1976, Sunreef offers experiences including diving on the ex-HMAS Brisbane, exploring Flinders Reef, and swim with humpback whales and whale watching tours.

The company operates seven boats, five jet skis, 10 kayaks and eight SUPs. It employs 42 staff and welcomes up to 450 guests daily.

Sunreef is based at The Wharf at Mooloolaba.
