A cult favourite Japanese-Mexican restaurant is set to open a beachside venue on the Sunshine Coast, offering hundreds of free tacos to celebrate.

TokyoTaco, which has a popular eatery in the heart of Sydney, will expand to Mooloolaba.

The doors of the new store at 1/121 Mooloolaba Esplanade will be opened on June 18, with 500 tacos are given away to guests who order via the app on June 28 and 29.

Co-founder Jordan Hajek said TokyoTaco offered a fast and fresh dining experience.

“We’ve always believed in making food fun, fresh and full of flavour,” he said.

“Mooloolaba gives us the perfect backdrop to bring that philosophy to life. It’s vibrant, outdoors and people here love to eat well.

“This space is everything we imagined a beachside TokyoTaco could be.”

Guests will be welcomed by a colourful mosaic doorway leading to a large communal table finished in the brand’s signature orange.

The interior includes handset terracotta tiles imported from Mexico, handmade Japanese tiles in tones of orange, grey and black from Nagoja, and a hand-painted mural by artist Charlie Nivison.

A 2.5-metre outward-opening pop-up window at the front of the venue adds a nod to the brand’s street food roots, doubling as a service hatch for passers-by.

The restaurant will offer internal and external seating, window perches and alfresco tables.

The venue will also include full-service bar and coffee operations.

Guests will be able to order at the bar, via self-serve kiosks, takeaway, or through the TokyoTaco app, which unlocks exclusive offers and brand-wide promotions.

TokyoTaco is renowned for its Japanese and Mexican flavours.

TokyoTaco has built a loyal following for its bold and inventive menu since it first opened at Newtown in 2022.

That venue quickly became a must-visit in Sydney’s inner west: for its signature dishes like the miso baked salmon taco layered with Japanese mayo and caramelised chilli sauce, the slow braised beef nachos topped with pico de gallo, and the cult-favourite TacoFries seasoned with TT’s iconic salt.

TokyoTaco Mooloolaba will be open daily from 11am. It will close at 9pm Mondays to Wednesdays and on Sundays, at 10pm on Thursday and at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
