An ex-AFL player who kicked more than 300 goals has opened a new health and wellness centre on the Sunshine Coast.

Corey McKernan, who won two premierships with North Melbourne, launched The Reset Sanctuary at Aerodrome Road in Maroochydore on May 21.

The centre blends physical recovery with mental wellbeing, offering ice baths, saunas, compression therapy, and wellness talks. It also includes shake and coffee bar Health Junkee.

The opening was warmly received. Its Founder membership offer was almost fully subscribed, while there has also been strong interest in other membership categories.

Mr McKernan kicked 310 goals in 237 AFL games – 196 for the Roos and 41 for Carlton – from 1993 to 2004. He was in premiership-winning teams in 1996 and 1999.

The 51-year-old was delighted to open the facility.

“This is one of the most exciting projects that I have been involved in, as it will be a combination of not just physical recovery but also the mental wellbeing of our members and friends,” he said.

“There’s no doubt there is a strong correlation between mind and body and we’ll be providing regular speakers to talk about mental health and peak performance, which is what separates us from other recovery centres.

“We recently had Tony Doherty come and speak to our Founder members about his illustrious journey in the fitness industry, which has seen him partner in major events with Arnold Schwarzenegger while passing on valuable information to build health, wealth and resilience.

“We are also keen to become an integral part of the local community and that’s why we have chosen to become the official recovery partner for the annual Chicken Run from Noosa to Caloundra, which will be held on July 24 this year.

“This is an iconic event on the Sunshine Coast where local legend Troy ‘Chookie’ Deighton dresses in a chicken suit and together with some friends they run 80km from Noosa to Caloundra. Best of all they are fundraising to support the great work of Dr Leon Stensholm’s Lookout 07 foundation.

“Troy and his team will be using our facility to help them recover as they train for this event in July.”

Dr Stensholm said he was thrilled to have the support of The Reset Sanctuary, which will play a vital role in helping Mr McKernan and his team recover so they are at peak performance to undertake the run in July.

“I’ve got to know Corey really well over the past year or so and I love his commitment to sharing his knowledge regarding physical and mental wellness,” he said.

“I am really keen to ensure there is a long term partnership between The Reset Sanctuary and Lookout 07.”

Experienced fitness professional Shane Nettleton has been appointed manager and will be supported by six part-time staff members.

He said what separates The Reset Sanctuary from other health and wellbeing services is the ability to tap into leading health, wellness and nutrition speakers, who will participate in exclusive events and workshops.

“We have created a space which will enable individuals to live better, feel better and thrive at all stages of life,” he said.
