A community group that hosts an annual car rally to raise money for families doing it tough has claimed a state award.

Rally for a Cause, which supports people impacted by life-limiting medical diagnosis and other tragic circumstances beyond their control, was named Community Group of the Year at the Queensland Community Achievement Awards.

The award, which received more than 100 nominations, recognises groups, organisations and not-for-profits that share a strong sense of team spirit and play a vital role in enhancing meaningful connections and social wellbeing.

Rally for a Cause chair Kerry Spencer thanked the communities that have got behind the charity since its inception.

“These awards are for everybody that has supported us, the small and large businesses, the individuals that have rallied and raised funds, whether it be through sausage sizzles, auctions or even raffles, this is for you,” she said.

“What started as a well-intentioned group of businesspeople wanting to do more to help a family facing life-changing news about their son, to today being able to assist every eligible recipient that is nominated, we truly are making the communities we serve more caring and compassionate.

“We don’t do it for recognition, but it is humbling to know that what we are doing is getting noticed and it is helping to shine a positive light on our communities and the lengths we will go to help others during some of the most challenging times in their lives.”

Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2024, Rally for a Cause has raised more than $4 million and assisted more than 360 families during some of the toughest times of their lives.

The charity’s main annual fundraising event is a four-day mystery car rally, the Dunga Derby, that leaves the Coast each August and heads country with more than 200 participants.

All funds raised during the event are donated to the charity to assist eligible recipients.

That support includes a range of measures from paying household bills, putting food on the table, covering the cost of accommodation while families need to travel away for medical treatment, pharmacy bills, medical equipment, household bills and even funerals.
