A heritage-listed homestead that once accommodated British royalty and has become an architectural “icon” on the Sunshine Coast is heralding a new chapter.
The Fielding family, who were pioneers of sugar planting in the area, began building the Queenslander in the early 1900s on the northern escarpment of Buderim mountain.
More than a century later this historical home, known as Buderim House, has been listed for sale.
The George Trotter-designed home at 10 Orme Road was built by Christian Schriver.
Steeped in history, the Duke of Gloucester, Prince Henry, stayed at the home during a trip to Australia in the 1930s.
The duke later went on to become the 11th Governor-General of Australia from 1945 to 1947.
Set on about 6000sqm of flat land, the north-facing home includes idyllic grounds, seven bedrooms, six bathrooms and three garages.
It features vaulted ceilings, a sweeping veranda and large European-style pool.
A four-year restoration process has recently been completed on the home to preserve its history-rich features.
Selling agent Tristan Kurz from Homestead Prestige said the “phenomenal” home was unlike anything else on the Sunshine Coast.
“The moment you walk through the gates of Buderim house, you genuinely feel like you’re on a property that shouldn’t exist any more,” he said.
“There is over an acre and a half of the most beautiful land, walking distance to Buderim village, with the most beautiful historic Queenslander on it. It’s surreal.
“There is simply no other property that gives you such a phenomenal ambience.”

As well as accommodating Prince Henry, Mr Kurz said if the walls of Buderim House could talk, they would recall many stories.
“There is the legendary story that the turret served as the unofficial light-signalling tower of the region prior to electricity,” he said.
“The house has got so many stories. Even since we’ve listed it, we’ve had a gentleman come forward that said his mother used to be a maid at the property.”
Mr Kurz said Buderim House offered the rare chance to own a historical slice of the Sunshine Coast.
“The opportunity is there for someone to own one of the most architecturally important properties in the Sunshine Coast region.
“If you have a look at what remaining private properties there are on the Sunshine Coast that were built prior to the 1920s, there’s not many left and not to this scale.
“You’re not just buying a house, you’re buying a very important piece of Queensland architectural history.”
