Several trees, including two large ones, will be cleared from a well-known island in the Sunshine Coast’s main river.

A Sunshine Coast Council assessment has identified dead and hazardous trees, and a small section of dead vegetation, on Chambers Island in the Maroochy River.

The trees will be removed from Wednesday, August 28, to Friday, August 30, with the island to be closed during the operation.

Council made a community service announcement on Monday.

“The dead trees and vegetation that need to be cleared include a large camphor laurel tree beside the playground and a large hoop pine next to the boat club,” it said.

“These trees will be removed for the safety of our community, who use the playground and boat club on the island.

“Clearing the dead vegetation will also reduce the volume of forest fuels and help maintain fire-adapted ecosystems.

“In line with council’s Environment and Liveability Strategy, the mulch, wood chip and salvaged tree material will be reused throughout our region in revegetation and offset projects where this material is absent.

“There is no plan to replant in this open space area as there is plenty of natural regrowth in this area.”

A barge will be used to help remove the green waste from the island.

There may be some disruption to the Nojoor Road boat ramp at Twin Waters, where the barge will be offloading the green waste.

“We thank our community for your understanding and patience during this time,” council said.

“We look forward to reopening the island and welcoming back our community in time for the weekend.”
