The Sunshine Coast Forensic Crash Unit is investigating a serious traffic crash in Federal, near Pomona, this morning.

Police were called to the northbound lanes of the Old Bruce Highway, about 400m from Sankeys Road, around 6am to reports of a two-vehicle crash.

Initial investigations indicate a Toyota HiLux, travelling south on the Old Bruce Highway, collided head on with a Skoda Karoq, travelling north.

Police are investigating reports of a kangaroo on the roadway.

The driver and only occupant of the Toyota HiLux, a 23-year-old Cooran man, was transported to the Sunshine Coast University hospital.

The driver of the Skoda Karoq, a 21-year-old Virginia man, was transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital via helicopter.

The only passenger of the Skoda Karoq, a 20-year-old Clayfield man, was transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

All are reported to be in a stable condition.

The road was blocked in both directions but was reopened about 10am.

Investigators are appealing to anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident to contact police.

Investigations are ongoing.

A Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said three of its crews attended, and one patient was freed using cutting equipment just after 6.30am.

LifeFlight issued a media release the vehicle the man who was airlifted was driving collided with a utility heading in the opposite direction of the highway.

It is believed the man driving the utility swerved to avoid hitting a kangaroo.

The LifeFlight crew, which landed the chopper on the road, worked alongside emergency services at the scene.

The airlifted man was treated for serious leg, pelvic and facial injuries and was taken to hospital in a stable condition with critical injuries.
