Four people were rescued from floodwaters on the Sunshine Coast overnight, when rainfall totals in excess of 200mm saturated parts of the region.

Storms cells made their presence felt from yesterday afternoon, when the Bureau of Meteorology issued a series of warnings.

Three fire and rescue crews and a swiftwater rescue team were called into action at Belli Park about 9.15pm, after a group of people became trapped by floodwaters on a property off Naranga Road.

Initial reports indicate there were three people on top of a car, who made their way to a tree, and a person on a tractor.

The swiftwater rescue team got to them by about 11.15pm and took them to safety.

Police and ambulance crews were on the scene and assessed the four people, who were uninjured and did not require transport to hospital.

Several roads were closed.

Heavy falls were recorded at Poona Dam (251mm), Mapleton (229mm), West Woombye (225mm), Maroochy Intake Weir (206mm) and Eeerwah Vale (201mm).

Major centres received some falls, including Nambour (140mm), Buderim (80mm) Tewantin (62mm), Maroochydore (59mm) and Caloundra (36mm).

Several roads were flooded and some still are, including Old Maroochydore Road, Eudlo Flats Road, Short Street at Perwillowen, Mayers Road, Wappa Dam Road, Image Flat Road, Coleman Road, Wharf Street, Vee Road, Doonan Bridge Road, Doonan Bridge Road North and Cedar Creek Road.

Bureau of Meteorology’s Daniel Hayes said it was a relatively intense weather event.

“We had a surface trough move through, with some upper level instability, that helped to get that shower and storm activity cranking overnight and bring that heavier rainfall,” he said.

“There were relatively light winds too, so it (the system) was slow moving which allowed for those larger accumulations.”

Showers and the chance of a thunderstorm were expected on the Sunshine Coast on Tuesday, with more showers possible later in the week.
