Sunshine Coast fans of the Brisbane Lions will have the chance to see last year’s AFL grand finalists up close as they take their pre-season on the road.

The Lions will travel to the Sunshine Coast for a series of training sessions and community activities this week as part of the 2024 AFL Community Camp.

The three-day camp running will see Lions players visit a number of local junior AFL clubs and community organisations, immersing themselves in the local community.

The camp includes open training sessions on Wednesday and Friday at Maroochydore.

Lions co-captain and academy graduate Harris Andrews said the whole club was aware of the importance the local community plays in growing the game within Queensland.

“Being part of the system in Queensland for my entire footballing career has shown me how much of a key role local football clubs and communities play in enhancing our game,” he said.

“This is the second year in a row we’ve been able to get out into the community and give back, which I know the whole playing group is excited about.

Lions player Eric Hipwood hails from the Caloundra Panthers.

“As AFL players we are in such a privileged position to be doing what we love so any chance we get to inspire the next generation of young players and meet our fans is something we all embrace.”

Brisbane Lions community manager James Dowling said the club couldn’t wait to get back into the community and show appreciation for the role that local communities play at a grassroots level.

“We’ve had a great couple of seasons and to have the ability to go into the community and inspire the next generation is something the entire club looks forward to,” he said.

“We are super excited to be heading up the Sunshine Coast and are looking forward to seeing all the Lions fans either at training or as part of our school visits across the region.”

The open trainings are from 8am on Wednesday and Friday at the Maroochydore Multisport Complex on Fishermans Road.
