From the AI of robotic dogs to the ABCs of electric aircraft, the latest in science will be on show at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Open Day.

Thousands of people are expected at the free public event on campus at Sippy Downs from 9am to 2pm on July 16, when more than 40 entertaining and educational hands-on activities will be offered.

Aspiring engineers can learn about an electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft project, while future paramedics and nurses use latest technology to treat patients and budding creative industries students perform, record and rehearse.

Sports labs will host speed and strength challenges against top athletes as the moot court features a legal showdown: Superman vs Batman.

Vice-Chancellor and president Professor Helen Bartlett said the open day was a fantastic opportunity for future students, family and friends to explore campus facilities, join information sessions and talk one-on-one with academics and support staff.

“Sunday will be a day of fun, fact-finding and inspiration,” she said via a UniSC media release.

“We want people of all ages to experience what’s on offer at our Sunshine Coast campus and find out how to study towards a better future.”

She said a highlight for career-minded visitors would be a panel session with UniSC deans discussing ‘Tomorrow’s Talent: the jobscape of the future’.

“Given our focus on sustainability and our location as the world’s only university operating across three neighbouring UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, we also expect strong interest in the K’gari Research and Learning Centre display,” she said.

Visitors will get the chance to win their own experience on K’gari when they register for Open Day and go into a draw for a three-night trip for two.

UniSC ranked number one in Queensland for ‘overall impact’ and ‘climate action’ in the latest Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.

It also recently ranked as the best public university in Queensland for the overall quality of its educational experience for undergraduate students – for the second year in a row.

Open Day information sessions will be tailored to different degrees, high school students and mature-age students.

The Hub will provide individual chats with academics who are the best in their fields. Support staff will answer questions about enrolment, scholarships, overseas study and student opportunities.
