Thousands of Sunshine Coast small businesses are set to benefit from power rebates.

About 20,000 of the region’s 35,000 small businesses were expected to get $650 off their power bill, via the state government’s 2023-24 budget rebate.

That’s in addition to the recently announced $550 off household power bills.

Labor’s Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt said it would make a significant difference to local enterprises.

“Small businesses are the heart and soul of Caloundra and the Sunshine Coast, and I know every little bit helps – particularly those feeling the pinch of national cost-of-living pressures,” he said via a state government press release.

“We’ve acted and put money back in the pockets of Queenslanders.

“There is around 20,000 small businesses on the Sunshine Coast expected to benefit from $650 off their business power bill. Plus a further $550 off your household bill makes a difference.”

It was recently revealed that Queenslanders were set to bear the brunt of the nation’s soaring power prices. Increases of up to 25 per cent were expected in the state’s southeast, including the Sunshine Coast, from July 1.

The Minister for Employment and Small Business Justice Di Farmer said the power rebates for small businesses would “set Queensland up for the future”.

“We are delivering substantial support that offsets typical business electricity bill increases in 2023-24,” she said.

“Queensland small- to medium-sized businesses will benefit from $35 million over three years to support them to reduce their electricity bills.”

There is a $700 cost of living rebate on electricity bills for vulnerable households, plus a further $372 under the Queensland Electricity Rebate Scheme, bringing total rebates for Queenslanders doing it toughest to $1072.
