As we journey through life, we accumulate stories that shape who we are and how we see the world. For seniors, the wealth of stories that they carry with them is particularly rich and fascinating, reflecting a lifetime of experiences and perspectives.
Now a group of local seniors has dictated and written a coffee-table book to help readers journey back in time with a treasure-trove of memories and stories.
Relationships Australia Queensland and Suncare Community Services were proud to present the new book Tales in Time to the contributors at a recent morning tea.
Within the pages of Tales in Time, readers will find a collection of tales told by seniors from all walks of life – stories of love, loss, triumph and perseverance. Some are funny, some are poignant but all of them are a testament to their incredible wisdom and resilience, as described and written by themselves.
The project was inspired by Barry ‘Baz’ Thomas, an ex-jockey, mutual client of Suncare and Relationships Australia and a man with a passion for storytelling.
Also making a significant contribution to the project was Garry Reynolds and his contemporaries from the Sunshine Coast U3A Creative Writers’ group.
“It is through the generosity and willingness of all the seniors who contributed their stories to this collection that we can share a look into the window of lives shaped by challenges, joys and experiences,” RAQ senior relationships coordinator Ben O’Rouke said.
“It has been a wonderful project to work on and we hope the book will entertain, uplift and inspire all those who read it.
“We really can appreciate these stories as shared and written by our Suncare and Relationships Australia customers, they have so much to tell and wisdom to impart.”
The book, made possible by a minor grant for creative development from the Sunshine Coast Council, showcases a gathering of written, creative expressions from seniors in our community.

One of the aims of the project was to help reduce social isolation by connecting older people through the power of storytelling.
The book was recently presented at the Suncare Community Centre in Maroochydore and the entertainment was provided by well-loved local seniors tap-dancing group Tap Katz.
The morning tea was catered by Suncare’s Meals on Wheels, Maroochydore.
