Many residents from around the Sunshine Coast were left scratching their heads after seeing a string of lights in the sky on Thursday night.

Local social media was abuzz at the strange sight.

“WTF did I just see, a line of lights for about two minutes, then it just went,” Mardi Huigens said on the Coolum Community Facebook page, which was particularly active.

“Was phenomenal … absolutely amazing.”

Scarlett Taylor was at Coolum’s Tickle Park when she saw the object, and thought it was a UFO.

“It was moving pretty slow, compared to a shooting star,” she said.

Several people tossed up their theories.

“It looked like something burning up as it entered Earth’s atmosphere,” Therese Brown said.

“Probably a large meteorite or some space junk. It was pretty spectacular.”

Gary Manu Burt said: “It’s called the Taurid meteor stream, however it’s usually Octoberish.”

Others offered some strange options.

“A Russian nuke maybe,” Mark Wildman said.

“It’s obviously a split in the parallel universe,” Nick Price added.

“Superman,” Carmel Wilkinson said.

“Chinese spy rocket,” Jordy Shivnen said.

“Plane taking off with window slides open,” Lisa Woodfine suggested.

It’s believed to be Starlink satellites, launched by American spacecraft manufacturer Space X, which was founded by Elon Musk.

A Falcon 9 rocket topped with 56 satellites left Florida and deployed the satellites in Earth’s lower orbit, where they will provide internet coverage for dozens of countries.

It’s believed thousands of Starlink satellites have been sent skywards since the program started in 2019.

So it appears they were just satellites seen in the sky on Thursday night.

“But aliens or a gateway to a new dimension sounds a lot more interesting,” Bree Horsey said.
