From Wurtulla, I thought I could hear something emanating from the western side of Nicklin Way last Saturday, and presumed it was an entertainment venue.

Then I found out that Kawana had won the Sunshine Coast Soccer grand final and it was probably the Banana Army going off at Banana headquarters.

Kawana defeated a brave Woombye side 2-0, which was a pretty fair effort considering they lost their star player Ryan Delahunty the week before.

In saying that, Woombye did an enormous job to get to the final by toppling Nambour Yandina United who only lost two games all year.

With my league hat on, I must say that while it is nice to win the Minor Premiership, when it all boils down, the GF is the only thing that matters. Woohoo Kawana!

Kayden Oakes and Braydon Houston were the goal scorers and the Man of the Match was Dylan Firth.

However, I understand that this was a close call, with Firth edging out Oakes and Harry Turner.

Now I am biased and l love the Bananas in Pyjamas as they are a club of stickers. They are guys and girls that played 20 or 30 years ago and are still involved.

No one was more deserving of a win than coach Brad Lloyd, who has played, volunteered, and served as president. He can now add another premiership to his resume. This is awesome as he is a wonderful human as well.

I must add that my source tells me the very talented ex-star Scott McLean was pretty keen on taking some of the credit for the goal scorers as he strapped their ankles.

Below is an excerpt of an email flying around about what the club has achieved. It’s pretty impressive:

“Since our first Grand final win in 1997, 24 years ago, this mighty little community club has played in 14 of the 23 First Grade men’s premierships (no GF last year) … that’s 60 per cent of the time we have qualified for the final game of the season.

From 14 attempts we have 9 Grand Final wins … that’s 64%.

“Funnily, we wouldn’t see our culture as winning, we see it as spirit, friendships and having a crack while remembering it’s a community club, where people work, enjoy holidays have kids and lives. So, it’s about having fun also.” 

Amen to that.

When Josh rescued a Knight

I see the Newcastle Knights have signed another nephew of Raider Josh Hodgson with the headline reading “Hodgson family moving to Newcastle from the UK”.

His brother Bailey is already at the Knights, but he almost wasn’t as we nearly drowned him at Alex when they had a team activity while up here during COVID.  I guess there is not much surf north of London. Only the quick thinking of another Josh, lifeguard Josh Linton saved the young bloke, so I hope his brother is a better swimmer.

Time to walk and talk
