A new surf lifesaving program that aims to boost the surf skills and confidence of over 50s is ready to hit the water on the Sunshine Coast.

The program is open to anyone over 50 and is designed to increase knowledge of local beaches while improving participants’ confidence in managing conditions, as well as emergency situations.

“You will be trained by highly-experienced surf lifesavers who will run activities to suit your individual capabilities,” Surf Life Saving Queensland Community Awareness Coordinator Janene Holland said.

“This is an experience that will save lives,” she said.

The first session is scheduled to be held at Mooloolaba Spit on Tuesday, March 23, from 9am-11.30am. The cost is $10 per person and this includes morning tea. To register email jholland@lifesaving.com.au or call 0427 694034.

The program will cover rip current identification and survival, wading and body surfing, ocean swimming technique, how to read surf conditions, an introduction to rescue boards, basic rescue techniques and First Aid, CPR and emergency care.
