Sunshine Coast Athletes Shine
by Special Olympics Sunshine Coast
May 19, 2010
WELL the races are all finished, the games all played and the Special Olympics National Games held in Adelaide in April have been wrapped up in style. Now it’s time to celebrate and the Sunshine Coast contingent of the Queensland team got together with their supporters and other Special Olympic athletes to do just that.
Twenty athletes from Sunshine Coast were selected for the Queensland team about this time last year and it has been a lengthy road of not only training but fundraising as well. The athletes represented in a number of sports including athletics, basketball, bocce, golf, swimming, tennis, and ten pin bowling and have returned home with a total of 12 Gold, 16 Silver, 13 Bronze, 7 Fourths, 2 Fifths and a Sixth. “They have done us proud” said Di Norton-Smit h, SO Sports Coordinator for the Sunshine Coast region and Head Coach for the Queensland Athletics team. “They have all worked hard and some of the recorded scores, results and times would be competitive at any level”. Di was one of nine coaches and team assistants selected from the Sunshine Coast region for the Queensland team and collectively they all expressed how well the team had done.
There was also a strong contingent of supporters who made the long journey by road and air to Adelaide to cheer on the team, and the athletes would like to thank them for their efforts. “It makes a big difference to see a familiar face and know there is someone from home cheering you on especially when it’s that far from home” said Liffy Brake, president of the SO Sunshine Coast region. “There were a lot of families of course, but they were also joined by other family members who live interstate which is great. Also there were people who don’t have family members involved in Special Olympics but they help us with the day to day running of the sports and they chose to make that long journey to support the athletes - I think that is fantastic and shows the true spirit of Special Olympic” she said.
Special Olympics also have another celebration on the horizon. On June 5th they will be celebrating 21 years on the Sunshine Coast and any past members who would like to come and reminisce can call Liffy Brake on 5442 3140 or Shirley Hastings on 5457 3683
