Maroochydore AFL Press Release

MAROOCHYDORE ROOS UNITE IN SUPPORT OF ANTI BULLYING & VIOLENCE CAMPAIGNE

This Tuesday evening one hundred players from the Maroochy Roos Junior and Senior Clubs and their families will unite to support David Gunter’s “I Roll with Dave” Campaign which is a National Anti Bullying and Anti Violence Campaign that’s sweeping the country.
The Maroochydore Roos AFL Junior and Senior organisations’ Club Spirit is stronger than ever as players are expected to pour in to the Club House to watch David Gunter, an inspiring Youth Mentor talk about teenage adversities such as bullying, drug abuse and getting on the wrong side of the law.
David Gunter is a former street kid who turned his life around to become a Queensland Correctional Officer and now a motivational speaker and youth mentor for young adults.
David Gunter is extremely passionate about what he does and is honoured to have the privilege of speaking to Maroochydore Roo players aged from 13 to 30 years of age.
“I can’t wait to come back at the end of the season to see the results that today’s talk has had on these young footy players and their lives both on and on the field,” David said.
David Gunter has a hectic schedule ahead of him with presentations locked in around the country, but speaking to a Sunshine Coast Football Club is something that is close to his heart.
“Being from the Sunshine Coast myself it’s really rewarding to be presenting to the Youth of our region. I have mentored many kids at both high schools and private schools but this will be my first presentation to a respected sporting group,” he said.
Joanne prince gillies, Partner of Red Property Group volunteers her time to the club as their Sponsorship and PR Manager.
“I have known David for quite some time and think what he’s doing is fantastic.
It will be an honour to have him speak to our Club House members and I hope he comes back again as I’m sure the players will certainly benefit from what David has to say.”
The main initiative for David speaking with the Junior and Senior players is that the Club wants to make their members aware that it only takes “one silly mistake to ruin your life”.
“With recent incidents on the Sunshine Coast and the SEQ region with the 3 young deaths at Point Cartwright, the terrible vehicle accident in Noosa and the fatal stabbing of a Brisbane boy has made issues such as bullying, violence and drugs a topical issue for our youths of today.”
The talk is expected to kick off from 5:30pm and will go for an hour, allowing enough time for the players to ask Dave questions and draw from his experiences and expertise.
David’s talk to the players will be about general code of ethics on and off the field, role models, the essence of “real men”, drugs social behaviours and the stereotypical perception of a “footy player”.

Dave will draw upon the real life examples from high profile local celebrities who have been under the spotlight for wrong doing.
“I will use people like Ben Cousins and Wayne Carey who are high profile AFL players who have had everything and laid it all on the line for reasons of self destruction, Gunter said.
David will also bring a local presence to the presentation and will touch on the repercussions of a local football player who has been involved in an alleged assault on the field.
“After the presentation the club members will enjoy a barbecue where we can all mingle and reflect on what messages David had to deliver,” Joanne said.
