New sporting facility at Meridan

by Sunshine Coast Regional Council
March 02, 2010
COUNCIL is well on the way to completing construction of the $3.2 million state-of-the-art sporting complex at Meridan Fields, ready for two local clubs to move in for the 2011 sporting season.

The clubhouse is due for completion in May with work on stage one wrapping up by November this year.

Cr Grosskreutz said that this is only the beginning for Meridan Fields

“It is hoped that the facility, next to both the Meridan and Pacific Lutheran Colleges, will act as a feeder ground for young sporting hopefuls,” Cr Grosskreutz said.

“With Palmview scheduled for major growth in the coming years, the location of the complex will provide much needed sport and recreation facilities to support this up and coming area.

“Stage One of the new facility, due for completion in November this year, will house six full size soccer fields—two with field lighting, two full size hockey fields—one with field lighting, a clubhouse and carpark.

“The possibilities are endless and the site location couldn’t be more perfect,” Cr Grosskreutz said.

The Caloundra Shelley Park United Soccer Club and the Caloundra SeaHawks Hockey Club will move to the site in the new year.

Council has allocated significant funds towards additional infrastructure within its 5-year capital works program, including sportsfield lighting, additional car parking and the development of cricket and AFL sportsfields.

The Federal Government, through the “Get Communities Working Stream” of the Jobs Fund initiative, has provided $454,454 funding support towards the construction of the clubhouse, with community infrastructure investment a key component of the $42 billion National Building Economic Stimulus Plan that will help support Australian jobs.
