Going viral spreads film festival bug

by Sunshine Coast Regional Council
July 14, 2009
THE move by local film festival SCRUFFFY to go online has paid off, with its YouTube site that screens winning entries beating thousands of sites around the country to rank in the top 30 most viewed YouTube channels.

Film buffs around the country voted on the site for their favourite festival film and SCRUFFFY today announced 25-year-old Daniel Voyesy of Sippy Downs as the winner of the “Caloundra Events Centre People’s Choice Award”.

His film “This Skim Boarding” is a collection of skim boarding footage filmed around the Sunshine Coast, and was the most viewed film on the site.

Council recreation and community development officer Adam Lewczuk said the YouTube site had only been online for just over a month, but had ranked in the top 30 most viewed YouTube sites for three consecutive weeks.

“For the first time in the festival’s four year history we’ve gone viral for voting on the People’s Choice Award and it’s proven to be a hugely successful move,” Adam said.

SCRUFFFY, the Sunshine Coast Regional Underground Film Festival For Youth, is an Australia-wide short film competition run as part of council’s YouthLinx program.
