Local teenager takes out top short film
by Sunshine Coast Regional Council
July 01, 2009
A 16 year-old Mountain Creek high school student has beaten other young filmmakers from around the country to take out the ‘Best in Festival’ prize for the SCRUFFFY short film competition.
SCRUFFFY, the Sunshine Coast Regional Underground Film Festival For Youth, is an Australia-wide short film competition run as part of council’s YouthLinx program.
Shannon Male of Buderim received the top gong at the SCRUFFFY awards ceremony on June 27 for her short narrative film “The Note”, which follows the story of a woman who is leaving her partner and as a final act of duty bakes a cake as her goodbye note.
Local category winners include Lucas Lynch, 15 of Nambour, for his film “The Voice” that takes a comedic look at an ordinary family and what happens when children are ignored; and James Carrol, 14 of Tanawah, for his film “Take Five” on frustration involving a carwash and a bird that sparks a disastrous chain of events.
Winners from the four categories were:
* Animation - Fabio Brasiliense of Brisbane for “Big best” (over 18); and James Carrol of Tanawah for “Take Five” (under 18);
* Comedy - Tristram Geary of South Australia for “Reich 4 Best” (over 18); and Lucas Lynch of Nambour for “The Voice” (under 18);
* Xtreme Short (extreme sport) - Anthony Fricker of Brisbane for “Longboard Dancing Best”;
* Short Narrative - Shannon Male of Buderim for “The Note”; and
Best in Festival Prize - Shannon Male of Buderim for “The Note”.
The People’s Choice Award is awarded to the most popular film, as voted by the people, on SCRUFFFY’s website. Voting is still open and people are encouraged to visit www.scrufffy.com to view the short films on YouTube and vote for their favourite.
SCRUFFFY’s YouTube site has been a big success for the underground film festival, recently being ranked the 24th most viewed YouTube site in Australia.
