House fire in Mooloolaba

by Queensland Police
November 19, 2008
A 39-year-old woman and her nine-year-old son had a lucky escape from a fire in their Meta Street apartment last night. Around 11.45pm the woman who was sleeping in her bedroom was woken by a smoke detector. She immediately went to her son’s room where she saw smoke coming from under the door. The woman entered through a two way bathroom and wrapped a doona around her sleeping son and removed him from the smoke filled room. The woman returned to try to extinguish the fire without success. Fire officers were called and quickly extinguished the fire before it spread to adjoining apartments. Preliminary inquiries suggests that a match used to light a candle in the child’s bedroom and thrown in a waste paper bin earlier in the night may have caused the fire. The mother and her son were suffering from shock but were otherwise uninjured. Extensive damage was caused to the bedroom. Further examinations of the scene will be conducted later today.
