Yesterday Sunshine Coast: Police and fire officers were still at the scene of a bush fire that threatened a number of homes at Castaway Beach and Sunshine Beach overnight. Fire officers were first alerted to a grass fire in the vicinity of the Sunshine Beach High School around 3pm Monday. The fires were exacerbated by strong north easterly winds. As the five kilometre fire front headed towards homes at Sunshine Beach and Castaway Beach it was identified that there was a possibility that evacuations may be necessary. Door knocks were conducted in the affected area to warn residents of the impending danger. Back burning was carried out and proved successful around 11.15pm. Fire officers remain vigilant as strong winds predicted for this morning could cause further problems. Residents and motorist are warned that heavy smoke in the area could affect visibility during the morning.
