RUNNING a harmonious and efficient household remains one of the more challenging responsibilities in life. This is especially true for families.

Today many households have one parent and others operate with both parents working. Never has it been more important for the whole family to work together to keep the home running smoothly.

Many of the parents and couples I coach burden themselves by not delegating enough responsibilities to their partner and kids around the home. They end up sacrificing their happiness for the sake of being a “good” parent or spouse. Unfortunately, no-one truly benefits from this sacrifice. The only thing that thrives in this environment is resentment and guilt.

The key to transforming martyrdom to joy is ensuring that everyone contributes according to their ability when work needs to be done. Regardless of whether your kids are 3 or 16 there’s a level of appropriate contribution they can make that will lighten the load and brings a sense of belonging and unity to the family.

If you’d like to let go of being the master of martyrdom ask yourself the following questions:
1. At what times of day do you feel most stressed and overwhelmed?
2. What support could you ask of your family to share the load and make it enjoyable?
3. Are all your family members contributing to their highest capacity around the home?
4. What daily and weekly tasks can you assign to other family members so that they are participating fully according to their ability?
5. What’s the best way of implementing the above changes and following through?
Once you start enlisting and receiving more support remember to acknowledge and be grateful. Celebrate your family’s successes in accomplishing daily tasks well!
